About
A first album, a first set of foundations. Recorded in 2000 as Gojira was barely emerging from obscurity in the Landes, Terra Incognita, Latin for “unknown land”, already carries the band’s hallmark: a search as spiritual as it is sonic. The writing draws on Joe Duplantier’s retreat from society, when he lived in isolation with no electricity and no income, an inward dive that runs through the whole record. Musically it’s still-raw death metal, threaded with progressive structures and the groove backbone that would become their signature. Fourteen tracks, flashes of an already-recognizable voice, and a few intimate touches, the piece “04” was written as a birthday gift for their mother. A dense debut that already hints at the ambition of a band apart.
