About
Magma was born of grief. During the recording, the Duplantier brothers’ mother fell ill and then passed away; the album is dedicated to her, and all of its material bears that mark. The title says it all: magma, that inner fire, an image of the emotions burning beneath the surface. It’s a turn: more stripped-back, more atmospheric, with shorter songs and a new place for clean singing. “Silvera” earned a Grammy nomination, and on “Low Lands” Joe sings in French. Less head-on but more piercing, Magma became their best-selling album to that point, proof that pain can be turned into art.
