Their first album for a major label (Roadrunner), L’Enfant Sauvage takes its title from Truffaut’s film about Victor of Aveyron, the child raised outside society. Its theme: freedom, and the responsibility it demands, a reflection fed by Joe Duplantier’s own step into fatherhood. Co-produced with Josh Wilbur, the sound grows in power, density and epic sweep. More direct without losing any depth (“The Gift of Guilt”), it’s the album that opened Gojira to a far wider audience, met with rare critical unanimity.
